Stand Up For Seaton (SU4S)

Community Action for Seaton's Regeneration Area, 80% owned by Tesco - a floodplain on a World Heritage site bordered by nature reserves, tidal river, the sea and the unspoilt town. SU4S is a state of mind - no members, no structure, no politics. SU4S has objected to 2 planning applications by Tesco, including one for a massive superstore/dot com distribution centre which led to the recent closure on the site of 400 tourist beds with the loss of 150 jobs,a gym and pool - all used by locals.

Press Release - Tesco and STC

Members of Seaton Town Council and representatives of Tesco held a two hour meeting, and both sides agreed it was a very useful meeting with an exchange of views, hopes and aspirations for the town, which was appreciated both by the council and by Tesco. The two sides agreed to keep each other informed on an ongoing basis as the regeneration proposals are developed.

Tesco have issued a press release which mentions market research,
this is presumably the telephone survey that is currently being
carried out.

Is it possible to see the questions being asked, and to know in what
form the answers are recorded, since presumably these "statistics"
will be
quoted at us when we are told what the people of Seaton want.

Also is Tesco classing this as "consultation"?

My understanding of consultation is that it is a dialogue, and should
allow people to ask questions, not just respond on the spur of the
moment to
a series of questions posed when one is telephoned out of the blue.

I looked at PR Dogs' website yesterday and found a statement on behalf of Tesco, dated 28.03.2008.

It states that "some demonstrators appear to be reacting to misinformation and misunderstandings. When the Lyme Bay Holiday Village opened seven years ago....."

NOT a good way to correct "misinformation and misunderstandings - the Holiday Village has been operating in the town for around 70 years I believe (I'm sure someone can come up with a more exact figure).

This sets the tone for the rest of the statement that follows, which totally lacks credibility and accuracy.

There was certainly a holiday village on the site in Seaton 70 years ago, but the present Lyme Bay Holiday village was opened by Hollybush seven years ago...

I think the Tesco statement refers to the current occupiers of the camp having been there 7 years. The owners before that went bust, and the camp closed for a short while before Hollybush Hotels signed a commercial lease, stating clearly that the freeholder would have the right to re-claim the site for re-development in the future. Tesco are well within their rights to close the camp down. Can we not look forward, and work with Tesco to provide modern holiday facilities? I love Seaton, but I would not choose to stay here at Lyme Bay Holiday Park because it is not the standard of accomodation a modern tourist would expect. I know for a fact most rooms only have a bath with no shower! The camp also alienates families, marketing itself as a adult venue.

Lets face up to the fact Seaton has to change. Too many people move here and expect Seaton to stay as it is. They are all attracted by a sleepy seaside town, trapped in time, with out of date facilities and nothing to do but watch time go by. Maybe REAL Seatonians would actually like their town to change for the better. It is long overdue.
No one is in a position to criticise Tesco until a plan is on the table. Only then can we start fighting for the best deal for Seaton.

In response to Cllr Graham Jones, I would me more than happy to meet him and discuss my views.

seatonresident seems to be out to cause mischief. While the holdiay camp age is being resolved here so everyone can see and understand the error, sr continues to bleat about "REAL" seatonians, actually meaning sr.
The comment is posted under an article stating that the council and tescos are moving forward, so the point of the post sr is what exactly?

Seatonresident believes that the facilities in the holiday camp are poor. How does he know if he is a "Seaton Resident"? Many holiday camp visitors call at my business in Colyton, all of them are more than satisfied with what is on offer to the extent that they often return several times a year. They are all disappointed and angry with what is happening.

ok. My post is somewhat "outspoken" and probably posted under the wrong article.
Mischeivious? certainly not. Passionate, YES!

I thought everyones point of view was welcome on this site? Unless you chose to gag my comments in future blogs? The main points of my comments still remain fact.
1. The holiday camp was always set to close.
2. Accommadation is out of date and needs updating
3. Families are not welcomed to holiday at Lyme Bay.
4. Tesco have no plan on the table to discuss.

With reference to me being the REAL SEATON RESIDENT in question; yes I am a real Seaton resident, born here, along with my family. There are many more people like me that are simply not being represented. Not sure we would be welcome in the Stand up for Seaton camp though!

Watch this space - we have plans!

seaton resident whether you (or I or anyone else living in Seaton) would chose to stay at the Holiday Village isn't actually releveant. The point is that a lot of people DID chose to stay there. And when they stayed there they visited the lcoal area and spent their money in shops, bars, cafes, on taxis, the land train, the Tramway and other local attractions. All of these will suffer from its closure.

The holiday village targeted adults - the holiday market that is growing in Devon - rather than children. That was a sensible commercial decision and allowed them to maintain high occupancy until threatened by redevelopment. If they had advertised the place a bit better it could have had higher occupancy!

There are many people in Seaton who don't use computers and whose views may or may not be represented here. However a large number of residents (more than usual) voted for stand up for Seaton candidates. I think that says most about what the silent majority (who are perhaps non responders to Tesco surveys) actually want.

Ok, probably a good place for me to jump in here, indeed the holiday camp caters for the adult market, however, it does also provide a two week (correct me if I'm wrong someone) solid booking for children. It also provides facilities to the Grizzly runners and various local organisations, eg the fire brigade and RBL.
But all of this, as seatonresident suggests, could be done in a new plan for the locale...ie getting the best deal for Seaton.
As I have just mentioned to PRdogs, the SU4S councillors were elected on a platform built around the principles listed on the right hand side of the blog, and an unusually high number of people agreed, not a bad survey! So the questions now are "where is the plan?" and "how do we move forward for Seaton, with Seaton?"
