Stand Up For Seaton (SU4S)

Community Action for Seaton's Regeneration Area, 80% owned by Tesco - a floodplain on a World Heritage site bordered by nature reserves, tidal river, the sea and the unspoilt town. SU4S is a state of mind - no members, no structure, no politics. SU4S has objected to 2 planning applications by Tesco, including one for a massive superstore/dot com distribution centre which led to the recent closure on the site of 400 tourist beds with the loss of 150 jobs,a gym and pool - all used by locals.

Don't you just hate it when .....

Apparently Hugo Swire says he wants to be the peacemaker between Stand Up For Seaton and the developers saying that, as far as he is concerned, we are not a million miles apart and we just need to compromise.

Mr Swire, a million miles is the least distance between us. The problem: Liatris wants to change Seaton so that it is like everywhere else; we want to change Seaton so that it completely different to everywhere else. REAL regeneration - something that will get people flocking in to see what we have done and marvelling at it, not something that gets them dashing out and moaning because of what we didn't do.

We want to go down the green route and work WITH the flood plain, Liatris wants to go down the grey concrete route and try to pretend that flooding doesn't exist.

We want a low energy, low carbon answer; Liatris wants a high-energy, high carbon answer.

I thought David Cameron wanted the same things that we want.

And as for Liatris: if they won't even answer a letter of concern that Seaton Town Council sent them in July, what chance has anyone else got?

And as for Mr Green (there's an oxymoron if ever there was one) - the Beer councillor: did you come to Seaton in the last week and see what we proposed as an alternative? If not, then perhaps you should - we will show you the 5 minute slide show (you and your colleague councillors) any time you like.

I am a Beer resident (I am on the border between Seaton and Beer) and I am ashamed of Mike Green. he is my councillor.

He has lost my vote and I shall be boycotting his shops. (Jimmy Green's)

Doesn't he realise that his business in Seaton will suffer due to the loss of the Holiday camp?

I know many families in Beer that use the Holiday Camp facilities, so he wants to take that away from the very people he represents. Nice to know he is looking after those people he is supposed to be helping.

Mike Green, if I see you in Beer, I will tell the same to your face. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I endorse Julia's remarks. I live in Beer and am deeply ashamed of Mike Green's attempts to influence the council and you have to ask why? He is entitled to an opinion as a business man and private citizen but by voicing his opinions at the Council meeting (despite not even being there),he gives the impression that all Beer people are welcoming this plan. There has been a kind of snobbery from many Beer people in the past and a sense that Seaton is the "dumping ground" of the area and therefore any old developement will do and even better if there are handy big stores for people to go before returning to their protected little village. But there are many here who don't like to see the little man get bullied and who like Seaton for the unpretentious Victorian town that it has always been. Please don't think we all agree with Mike Green's uninformed and uninvited comments. He does not represent any of the people I speak to. Injustice is injustice wherever it occurs and many of us appreciate that if Seaton does get it wrong, generations to come will blame us for it, with good reason. Stand up for Seaton

some of us are prepared to compromise and work with the developer. However as has been said the developer has shown no desire to compromise. Perhaps, Sandra, you could put out a plea for another devloper via the blog. Available - one Town keen to see some ecologically development. Assets - a load of tourists who love visiting and want to spend money here. Longest beach in Devon, flat so it appeals to the market that is growing in Devon. SUSTRANS cycle route arriving soon to increase demand for accommodation. Land train starting soon too. Beautiful walks and a river which attracts all year round visitors for its birdlife. Residents who have hardly anywhere to buy clothes (especially mens clothing). Reasonable public transport links to bring people here to shop.
